Electrical / Mechanical Engineer
Nielson Scientific LLC Provo, UT (On-site) Full-time
About Nielson Scientific LLC
Nielson Scientific LLC is a cutting-edge innovator in 3D microfabrication and nano-ablation technologies, headquartered in Provo, Utah. Founded in 2017 by Dr. Gregory Nielson — a PhD graduate of MIT in micro and nanotechnology with prior experience as a Truman Fellow and Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories — our company was built on a singular mission: to push microfabrication beyond the limits of traditional 2D lithography.
Our proprietary 3D semiconductor etching and nano-ablation processes work across silicon, silicon carbide, diamond, and other advanced materials, enabling non-line-of-sight, high-aspect-ratio features at micron-scale resolution. These capabilities power breakthroughs in quantum computing microsystems, THz filters for CMB telescope experiments, superconducting cables, cryogenic probe cards, microwave wire grid polarizers, silicon beam splitters, micro flex circuits, and defense applications.
We are a lean, growth-oriented team of engineers and scientists who thrive on solving the “impossible” challenges in microsystems engineering. Join us as we engineer the future—one microscale detail at a time.
Job Summary
We are seeking a talented and motivated Electrical or Mechanical Engineer to join our innovative engineering team in Provo, UT. In this role you will work directly on the design, development, and optimization of advanced microsystem devices and scientific components. The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, thrives in a flexible and fast-moving environment, and is excited by the prospect of working at the absolute frontier of science and technology. Whether your background is in electrical systems, MEMS, RF/microwave, cryogenics, precision mechanics, or optical systems, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
· Assist in the design and development of advanced microsystem components including THz filters, superconducting cable assemblies, polarizers, silicon beam splitters, cryogenic probe cards, and micro flex circuits.
· Apply electrical or mechanical engineering principles to solve challenging microfabrication and microsystem design problems using our proprietary 3D etching, nano-ablation and Photolithography.
· Collaborate closely with scientists, production technicians, and external research partners to translate customer requirements into manufacturable designs.
· Conduct simulation, modeling, and analysis (electromagnetic, thermal, mechanical, or optical) to support design decisions and optimize device performance.
· Plan and execute prototype builds, design experiments, and iterate based on data—maintaining rigorous documentation at every stage.
· Interface with government, defense, and academic customers (including ITAR-sensitive programs) to support technical proposals, design reviews, and project milestones.
· Contribute to process development, fixture design, and tooling improvements to support scalable production of precision components.
· Support ISO-compliant quality and documentation systems, including digital work instructions and engineering change management.
Qualifications
· Education: Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field. All degree levels are encouraged to apply—we value curiosity, aptitude, and drive.
Skills:
· Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent) and/or electromagnetic or mechanical simulation tools (HFSS, CST, COMSOL, ANSYS, or similar).
· Experience or strong academic background in one or more of: MEMS/microsystems, semiconductor fabrication, RF/microwave engineering, cryogenic systems, optical systems, or precision electromechanical design.
· Familiarity with PCB design, flex circuit design, or electronic assembly at the component level is a plus.
· Comfort working with advanced materials including silicon, silicon carbide, diamond, superconducting metals, and thin films.
· Data analysis and technical documentation skills; experience with MATLAB, Python, or similar is beneficial.
· Other: Ability and enthusiasm to work in a flexible, startup-style environment where roles evolve and no two days are the same. U.S. citizenship or eligibility to work on government-funded and defense projects required (ITAR compliance). Ability to work on-site in our Provo, UT facility, including occasional cleanroom environments (gowning and PPE required).
